With the ongoing isolation and thank goodness the continuing dry weather, I seem to be spending a lot of time in the Kitchen Garden. I am gradually restoring it, if not to its former glory but to a fraction of my father’s standard.
Back then, half of the garden was dedicated to that good old Irish staple, the potato. I have happy memories of my Father bringing in the first potatoes. They were delicious, mashed with butter and salt! I am reintroducing potatoes this year and I hope we will be open again in the summer so that guests can enjoy the fresh vegetables from the garden at dinner.
Due to the travel restrictions my son wasn’t able to come over from Scotland to help me with some of the heavy work. I am planning to make a raised bed with the old sleepers, but in the meantime I will concentrate on the new herb garden.
I love spending time in this garden as it is south facing and is a sun trap as well as looking out towards the Mourne Mountains. Stay safe and enjoy your gardens! #hidden_ireland #growyourown #victoriangarden
Spent a fantastic week with Catherine in August 2022. Catherine exudes Irish hospitality and is a wealth of local knowledge and history. Kiltariff Hall is beautifully situated in the Mourne Mountains. It really is a home away from home with an ambience you would never get in a hotel.
